Why we built a Boox file-transfer extension
Onyx's built-in ways to get files onto a Boox — USB cable, BooxDrop, the Push button — are all clunky. The browser is where you find most things worth reading. So this is the simplest possible bridge: drag a file, it's on your device.
The extension talks directly to the Boox API. Your files don't touch our servers. We don't have user accounts. We don't have anything to sell you.
Boox file transfer — frequently asked questions
- Is it really free?
- Yes. No paid tier, no ads, no upsells. The whole thing runs in your browser talking to Boox directly — there's nothing for us to bill you for.
- What files can I send to my Boox e-reader?
- Boox supports 20+ file formats out of the box via NeoReader: EPUB and EPUB3, PDF (up to 2 GB), MOBI, AZW3, FB2, PRC, DJVU, CAJ, DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, ODT, RTF, TXT, HTML, CHM, comic archives (CBR, CBZ), and image files (PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF). The extension itself doesn't restrict file types.
- Does my Boox e-reader need to be connected to WiFi?
- Yes. Files are pushed to your Boox via Onyx's cloud sync, so your e-reader needs to be on WiFi to receive them. If it's asleep or offline when you send, the file appears the next time it wakes up and reconnects.
- What about my privacy?
- Your Boox login token lives in your browser's local storage. Files go directly from your browser to Boox's cloud — we never see them. We collect anonymous usage events (install, send succeeded, send failed) to know if the tool is working.
- What if Boox changes their API?
- The extension uses Onyx's sync API, which is what their own apps use. If they change it, we'll ship an update. If they shut it down entirely, the extension stops working and the project ends.
- Will this work with Kindle?
- No. Amazon's Send-to-Kindle is the way to do this for Kindle. This is purely for Onyx Boox e-reader users.
